Chinese Oil Landscape on Canvas
Stretched oil landscape on canvas done by Chinese Artist Yong Li, dated and signed lower right and also verso, capturing a traditional architectural scene Fenghuang County, Hunan Province, China, rendered ina strikingly textured and semi-abstract style. The composition is dominated by rooftops rendered in a layered, almost cubist fashion, with gray and muted tones conveying the quiet elegance of ancient Chinese towns. The rooftops—some curved and others angular—evoke classic southern Chinese architecture, particularly the upturned eaves and tiled roofs.
Hints of color—such as the red panels, blue accents, and scattered dots of brighter pigments—suggest lanterns and banners. The brushwork is bold and expressive, utilizing a heavy impasto technique to give depth and movement. Though the architectural forms are somewhat abstracted, there’s a clear sense of perspective and layering that mimics the stacked and winding nature of Fenghuang’s riverside townscapes. In the foreground, muted dark bands frame the lower part of the scene, giving it a grounded, almost stage-like quality. Wonderful!
